#LTT #LiteracyTipThursday Here is another activity to do at home to support a child's phonemic awareness.
Blending: Parent - "Can you blend (put together) three sounds to make a word?" Say the SOUNDS (not letter name) /g/ /e/ /t/. Your child will repeat those sounds back and then tell you the whole word. Child: "/g/ - /e/ - /t/ > get"
* /m/ /o/ /m/ > mom
* /t/ /a/ /p/ > tap
If your child is having difficulty, try slowly blending the sounds and then ask your child to say the word, or start with 2 sounds adding more sounds as they progress.
If your child is staying for Little Cheer tomorrow after school, please contact the office or send a note with your child tomorrow.
AHS JV Tournament begins 12/11. Bracket is attached.

#LTT #LiteracyTipThursday Below are some terms you may encounter in your child's reading instruction this year:
* Word Mapping = the process of breaking a word down into its phonemes (sounds) and writing the graphemes (letters) that represent the phonemes.
* Heart Words = high frequency words that have a "tricky part" that cannot be decoded. For example, the word SAID - the /s/ and /d/ can be sounded out or decoded. The ai portion of the word says /e/ which must be learned by heart.
AHS Boys Basketball travels to the Oran Tournament tonight for a consolation semifinal. Game is scheduled for 7:30pm. There is no streaming option.

#LTT #LiteracyTipThursday Below are some terms you may encounter in your child's reading instruction this year:
* Phonological awareness = the ability to recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of words including syllables, onset-rime, and phonemes.
* Phonemic awareness = the ability to identify, hear, and manipulate the individual sounds heard in spoken language, phonemes.
Both of these are key skills for students learning to read.

During Tuesday's Math Night for parents, the following sites were recommended to help students practice their math facts:
https://99math.com/ Free
https://www.abcya.com/ Free
https://www.ixl.com/signin/advancehornets for grades 3-12. Be sure to log in with school username and password. The username will be the student's first and last name with no spaces or periods. Their password is the same password used for their school account. Math facts are found in the 3rd grade section.
Tip: allow your child to practice for ~10 minutes a night on their facts. This will help them learn their facts without reaching frustration. Mix up the site they use or also try flashcards.
