* Phonological awareness = the ability to recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of words including syllables, onset-rime, and phonemes.
* Phonemic awareness = the ability to identify, hear, and manipulate the individual sounds heard in spoken language, phonemes.
Both of these are key skills for students learning to read.

During Tuesday's Math Night for parents, the following sites were recommended to help students practice their math facts:

https://www.ixl.com/signin/advancehornets for grades 3-12. Be sure to log in with school username and password. The username will be the student's first and last name with no spaces or periods. Their password is the same password used for their school account. Math facts are found in the 3rd grade section.
Tip: allow your child to practice for ~10 minutes a night on their facts. This will help them learn their facts without reaching frustration. Mix up the site they use or also try flashcards.

Starting today, parents and guardians of children 5 years and younger will be able to register to receive FREE children's books mailed to their homes. Please join us tomorrow for Math Night that will focus on helping your child develop their math brain. Come learn about resources and strategies for math. Babysitting will be provided by Jr. Beta. Don't worry, we won't make you do any math problems :)
AHS Volleyball travels to the Show Me Center today, and will take on South Iron today at 4:00pm for the Class 1 State Championship. There will be a pep bus for students in grades 7-12. See information about the pep bus in the attached picture.

Luke Ballin runs at the MSHSAA Cross Country Championships at 9:00am and AHS Volleyball takes on Galena at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau in a MSHSAA state semifinal match at 6:00pm.
If you can't make the race or game you can purchase them to watch on MSHSAA.TV

You can help build phonological awareness in your child by playing categories. Think of a category (animals, sports, thigs at school). Ask your child to blend (put together) the syllables to make the word. For example, say "I am thinking of some pets. Can you tell me what they are . . . ?"

Congratulations to the AHS Cross Country team on a stellar performance at the Class 1 District 1 race at Notre Dame today! Finn Mayberry earned a new PR of 29:14. Tucker Gilmore also earned a new PR of 24:30! Luke Ballin, senior, finished in SIXTH PLACE earning a new PR of 17:48 and defeating the previous school record held since 2012! He competes at the State Championship on Friday, November 3 in Columbia! AHS XC Hornets you make us proud! Pictures to come. #HornetPride!
